The Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) has selected our Hinckleys Pond Association (HPA) as the HCT 2021 Conservationist of the Year. In a recent letter Executive Director Mike Lach explained the HCT decision. From the start of the HCT 31-acre Hinckleys Pond-Herring River Headwaters Project, Hinckleys Pond Association (HPA) members have demonstrated outstanding support for preserving the land to protect the water quality of the pond and river. HPA provided a letter of support for the HCT State grant application, HPA organized a July 31st fundraiser, organized an art auction to benefit the land-saving project, has raised over $75,000 in donations/pledges, and continues to raise funds. HPA members are determined, dedicated stewards of the watershed and pond. We look forward to honoring Hinckleys Pond Association at HCT's Nov. 6th virtual Annual Meeting (1-2:30 p.m. EST).

Selectman Larry Ballantine pushed the $650,000 request for restoration and improved public access to Hinckley's Pond, which he said was a critical part of the wastewater management plan. Several area towns have used CPA funds for similar programs. The committee last year rejected funding for the project, but the CPC voted 5-2 to support the request this year.
